A chimp and a monkey

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

The chimps seem to have a love/hate relationship with stuffed animals. Stuffed monkeys and apes, in particular, tend to get their insides ripped out quickly and somewhat violently. Sometimes, though, if they have that ineffable quality, they are granted a temporary reprieve and become snuggle partners.

Volunteer Stephanie P. and her niece Sara donated this giant monkey to the chimps, and he/she is still “alive” and kicking, against all odds.

Update on Alamogordo chimpanzees

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

Please see our July 16th post, Chimpanzees to be moved for research, for the background information on this story.

Fifteen chimpanzees have already been moved from the Alamogordo Primate Facility (APF) to the Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research in Texas, but we cannot give up. The chimpanzees need us to speak out for them.

New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson has issued a press release asking the NIH to permanently retire all of the APF chimpanzees, return the 15 chimpanzees that have already been sent to Texas and convert the Facility into a sanctuary.

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) has made it easy for everyone to contact the NIH about this urgent issue. Please see the HSUS action alert, take action and share with your friends today.

You can keep updated on the campaign to retire the APF chimpanzees by following Animal Protection of New Mexico on their website and their Facebook page.

Burrito and Missy have so much fun together! They played this particular game for nearly an hour this morning.

Chimps’ Choice

Friday, July 16th, 2010

Once again, last month’s Chimps’ Choice- acidophilus and gummy vitamins- was a huge success! We did, however, receive a few packages that did not have names on them, so if you sent some, please send me an email (Jackie@ChimpSanctuaryNW.org) and let me know so I can be sure to send you all bumper stickers!

For this month’s Chimps’ Choice, we are requesting seeds for the chimps’ garden (which is looking incredible this year, by the way!) We don’t want people to go to the trouble of going out and buying them, so maybe you have some laying around your house? Or maybe you could stop by your local nursery to see if they would be willing to donate some for the chimps? Get creative! Though not at all comprehensive, I’ve made a list of fruits and veggies we can grow in this area that the chimps like, just to give you an idea:

Carrots
Corn
Cucumbers
Kale
Greens
Bell Peppers (red, orange, yellow, and unique colors are best- Foxie refuses green!)
Onions
Green onions
Leeks
Radishes
Beets
Broccoli
Cabbage
Cherry Tomatoes
Sunflowers (or any edible flowers)

There are lots of other veggies that can be grown here that I probably haven’t thought of, so if you come across something that your are unsure is suitable for our area, send me an email and I’ll let you know.

Despite this cold summer weather, this year’s garden is still managing to be quite successful. We have a couple of new features that are both practical and add an interesting aspect to the chimps’ view– beautiful wooden compost boxes and a pea/bean teepee trellis. The teepee will soon have tons of beans and peas growing up the sides, along with beautiful mammoth sunflowers. BIG thanks to Dakotta from the High Mountain Sustainable Project for his amazing artistic skills! He rocks!! :)

CSNW Caregiver Exercise Program

Tuesday, July 13th, 2010

Next to Missy, Burrito and Foxie are probably CSNW’s biggest goofs (chimp-wise, anyway) and balancing games of chase between the two of them can be quite a workout. I couldn’t ask for better personal trainers. :)
