Party for Love a Chimpanzee Day

Saturday, April 23rd, 2011

We put the emphasis on delicious fresh food for Love a Chimpanzee Day 2011, brought to the chimps by Monica, who sponsored a day and sent some extra cash and goodies for us to throw a party. (Find out how you can sponsor a day by visiting our donate page or contacting us).

Here is the forage before spreading it out (and a few non-food treats for the chimps):

Here’s Negra traveling with a perfectly ripe avocado – a favorite among all of the chimpanzees:

Here’s Foxie picking peas out of the “garden” that volunteer Connie created in the sandbox

Negra even opened a present!

Annie seemed fond of this new doll:

Foxie did not seem fond of the same doll, though she did seem to enjoy taking it apart – it’s all part of the fun:

It was a beautiful sunny day in Cle Elum and all of the chimps really enjoyed the goodies today. Dinner ended with lots of nuts for Negra and figs. Little do they know they’ll be having another party tomorrow!

Thanksgiving Video

Saturday, November 27th, 2010

Now you can hear all of the food squeaks, see the anticipation, and relive Thanksgiving at the sanctuary. Hope everyone is having a great holiday weekend, or regular weekend, depending on where you live.

Grass

Tuesday, September 14th, 2010

The chimps were thrilled to have a grass forage this morning. I am still not sure what’s going to happen when we complete Young’s Hill, and they get to go out onto two acres of grass. Annie may never come back in again!

Foxie took one piece of grass at a time and carried them around like a pirate carrying a knife in his mouth while climbing a ship’s rigging. Strange analogy, I know, but that’s what it looked like.

Foxie

The chimps eat grass differently than they do other types of food and browse. They take one piece at a time, fold it accordion-style, and swallow it without chewing (often gagging themselves in the process!).

Happy day

Sunday, April 4th, 2010

Whether today represents a day to find surprises in little plastic eggs, or a day to test out fancy new boots, or a day to build a giant pink nest, or just a day to enjoy the world, the chimps wish you much happiness in your adventures.

Video to come later or tomorrow!

Love Day!

Sunday, February 14th, 2010

The chimp’s had a fantastic Valentine’s Day party! Two of our supporters, Robbi and Dick Brown, brought TONS of fabulous new toys including books, stuffed animals, a plastic shopping cart, new troll dolls, scarves, socks, and a red feather boa. We filled gift bags of various new toys and wrapped the rest in red wrapping paper. Stephanie Perciful, our morning volunteer, brought tons of goodies as well, including food, decorations, and a lips-shaped pinata! The theme of the day- RED! Almost all the food was red- including strawberries, raspberries, red bell peppers, peaches, red pears, plums, apples, and pear juice in cute little bottles Stephanie brought. Elizabeth put a few raspberries and strawberries in decorative muffin cups (beautiful touch!) and put bite sized pieces of fruit in festive bags that we scattered and hung from various places in the playroom. The chimps were SO excited! The playroom was decorated to the max! Thanks so much to Dick, Robbi, Stephanie and Shelley, Margaret, and Karen! You guys put on quite the party! Due to technical difficulties, I was unable to put a video together today, but I’ve posted a sneak peek of the food. I promise more to come tomorrow… :) Happy Valentine’s Day!

Lettuce bonanza

Monday, September 14th, 2009

Jackie threw whole heads of lettuce on top of the enclosure tonight as part of dinner. If you know Negra, you probably know two things: first, she is not exactly the ‘athletic’ type. Second, she LOVES lettuce. So, we were very impressed when we saw her climb up and dangle from the tippy-top of the enclosure to get her head of lettuce! In the second part of this video you’ll see Missy doing the same thing, but with a bigger payoff. At the end it looks like she doesn’t quite know how to drop down to the platform without dropping her haul!

July 4th forage one year later

Saturday, July 4th, 2009

I think it’s really starting to sink in that the Cle Elum Seven have been in sanctuary for one year. We can now look back at blog posts from exactly one year ago and see how much has changed, including our videography skills! So, watch the video below and check out the video and photos from the last 4th of July celebration: http://www.chimpsanctuarynw.org/blog/?p=177

Eat, sleep, repeat

Friday, May 29th, 2009

Last night, one of our volunteers made peppers stuffed with rice, apples and lime juice for dinner:

This morning, the chimps nibbled on grass:

Afterwards, Jody decided to make herself comfortable:

Missy, as usual, stopped to pose for a photo:
