Brandon Wood Rocks!

Thursday, November 17th, 2011

In case you haven’t heard, in the world of chimps, Brandon Wood rocks!

Brandon is 11 and has been working hard on behalf of chimpanzees. He’s been very busy sending letters to congress and to the president, telling them about the importance of the Great Ape Protection and Cost Savings Act, and has even been fundraising for the Cle Elum Seven! His dedication, passion and diligence is something to really look up to. I know I do!!

So, as a way to honor him and all that he has done, and is doing, we had a surprise party for the chimps today. Volunteer Connie initiated the plan and brought a few “rock star-style” party decorations and then, volunteers Stephanie and Katelyn went on the hunt in Seattle and found all kinds of rockin’ decor, including a guitar pinata- because we think Brandon “rocks”! In addition, I secretly contacted Brandon’s mom, Deanna, to find out some of Brandon’s favorite foods and snacks so we could have them for the party and make the day as special as possible.

To get the chimps geared up for a party, we started things out by having a snow cone/cup forage in the greenhouse.

Deanna told me that one of Brandon’s favorite things is pumpkin pie. We don’t give the chimps dairy or sugar, so we were presented with a challenge, but it didn’t stop us! We pureed pumpkin, soy milk, tofu, and cinnamon and baked it inside mini pumpkins. I think it worked out pretty well!

Burrito loved it!

Jamie:

Deanna told me that another favorite of Brandon’s is ants-on-a-log, and that he also really enjoys tomatoes, cauliflower, broccoli, and carrots. Can you guess what we served the chimps for lunch?

Thank you so much for all you do, Brandon! In our eyes, you really are a rock star!

Happy faces

Did I mention that I love Jamie-ween’s Hallo-Birthday at CSNW? As if The Great Pumpkin and all the treats in the Playroom weren’t enough, volunteers Stephanie and Katelyn carved mini pumpkins and filled them with various fruits and veggies (cucumbers, strawberries, cherry tomatoes, etc) for the chimps’ lunch forage in the greenhouse. I think the chimps were already stuffed at that point, but they enjoyed them none the less! Needless to say, no one, not even Burrito, was interested in dinner.

The carved mini pumpkins:

If you take a closer look at the photo above, you might noticed that one of the pumpkins has a “CS” on it. And you may notice that in the photo below, Burrito’s carved pumpkin has a “W” on it. It was impossible to really get a good photo of the whole thing, but it says CSNW. Stephanie is so creative.

They also carved faces into melons:

What a great day. Thanks so much to Stephanie, Katelyn, Tamela, Dick and Robbi for all the awesome gifts and decorations for the party and to all of those who donated in honor of Jamie’s big day! You guys are the BEST!

It’s official- Jamie-ween is my favorite CSNW holiday. We all had such a good day yesterday! Here are a few more pictures of the party in the playroom (and I promise, there is even MORE to come!)

Missy with the raisin-filled pinata:

There was some intense love for the pumpkin. It was 35lbs of deliciousness that lasted allll day long.

The Great Pumpkin

Monday, October 31st, 2011

As Diana mentioned in a blog post from earlier, Jamie and I share a birthday today! I can’t think of a better way to spend my Hallo-birthday than by throwing a party for Jamie and the rest of the Cle Elum Seven!

We have a lot of folks to thank for making today’s party a huge success. Robbi & Dick Brown and Tamela donated a lot of fun new toys and decorations, and volunteers Steph and Katelyn brought some new things with them today as well. We also want to thank Deborah G., Barbara B., Jessica K., Tamela, and Jeani G. for donating towards Jamie’s big celebration today! And of course we can’t forget all of Jamie’s Chimpanzee Pals: Cherie Breaux & Robert Bochnik; Kathy Carlson; Candy Crannell; GFWC Cascade Woman’s Club; Debbie Kray; Pam Lehnert & Marc Warner; KC McCarthy; Jackie Mulanax & Brad McNeice; Debra Redwine; Pam Reid; Kathleen Roan; Tony Silvia; Nicole Sturn; and Jackson Walkden-Brown.

Steph and Katelyn brought with them a giant pumpkin, with Jamie’s named carved in it (and the “J” was made into a boot!) The following photos are of the Great Pumpkin (as I’ve decided to call it).

So much happened today that I’m pretty sure there will be more Hallo-birthday photos and videos posted tomorrow!

Happy Halloween Birthday

Monday, October 31st, 2011

Today is not only Halloween and Jamie’s honorary birthday, but it is also caregiver Debbie’s birthday. And in just three days it will be caregiver Elizabeth’s birthday. Send a donation “treat” for Jamie or her caregivers and your name will be on the blog later today – so get your donation in soon!

Halloween parties are so much fun at the sanctuary – just ask Jamie.

Happy Birthday, Anne Roberson!

Sunday, October 2nd, 2011

Mary Ann Baltich has sponsored this day of sanctuary in honor of Anne Roberson’s birthday.  It’s a fitting gift for someone who generously supports the chimps monthly through our Chimpanzee Pal program (Anne sponsors Annie).  Mary Ann, Annie, and all of us at CSNW wish you the happiest of birthdays, Anne!

Here’s Annie celebrating her own birthday a few weeks ago:

We Love Annie

Annie had a magnificent green-filled birthday. Lots of new gifts, lots of her favorite foods and lots of love from staff, volunteers and supporters.

Happy Birthday to Annie from Marcia Douthwaite!

Saturday, September 10th, 2011

Marcia has sponsored today in celebration of Annie’s 37th birthday (we’re gearing up for the party right now!).  Marcia is a regular blog reader, and a sweet and devoted supporter of the Cle Elum Seven.  She even sponsors Annie and her best friend Missy through our Chimpanzee Pal program.  Thanks, Marcia, for helping us give Annie and her friends the celebration they deserve!

Birthday Coconuts

Tuesday, August 23rd, 2011

Missy’s birthday party was today. First, in the playroom, Jackie and I put almost entirely SOCKS out for the enrichment (we also included some boots and trolls, which are essential for enriching Jamie and Foxie). After we cleaned the outdoor area, we set up a huge forage of watermelon, lychees, bananas, bell peppers, green beans, and of course everyone’s favorite—coconuts! We also put out amazing gift bags put together by Robbi and Dick with all sorts of new enrichment. As we were setting up the forage, the chimps watched from the windows and were food grunting and squeaking.

Jackie took dozens of pictures of the chimps foraging through Missy’s birthday party, but sadly, the camera “decided” to re-format the card! So we lost all the pictures. Luckily when we realized this, the chimps had brought their coconuts into the playroom, and I was able to get a few photos of that.

Here’s Missy opening her coconut (notice she’s holding it steady with her foot!)

Foxie:

Burrito:

Burrito had an interesting method of trying to open his coconut. First, he was dragging it across the ground, and started rolling it back and forth. When that didn’t work he tried tossing it around and around:

He still hasn’t gotten it open but he is keeping it close to him. Hopefully he’ll get it open at some point!

I didn’t get a picture of Jody with a coconut, but here she is enjoying some leeks from our garden at the end of the party forage.

Happy Birthday, Missy!

Jackie and Diana are going to be goofy in Missy’s honor in about 10 minutes, and I’m sure it will be quite the sight to see. I’ll be photographing the event, and hopefully we’ll get some good shots posted tomorrow. Thank you to everyone that has pledged or donated to today’s Missy Games!
