Highest quality nuts from NutsOnline.com
Highest quality nuts from NutsOnline.com

NutsOnline.com is a company that sells nuts and dried fruit and, lucky for us, they have lots of unsalted and unsweetened options. They support many different sanctuaries and animal organizations, and now, that list includes CSNW. We recently joined forces with NutsOnline.com and now they have a care package that is specifically designed for the Cle Elum Seven! The care packages are $28 and include 1 pound bags of Mixed Nuts (In Shell), Raw Pumpkin Seeds (In shell), Hard shell Pecans, Blanched Hazelnuts, White Popcorn Kernels, and Organic Tropical Dried Fruit Mix- all perfect ingredients for our Night Bags! These care packages are available anytime through this website, which can also be easily accessed through our wishlist.

Another good decision

Another company, Capitol One, has pulled their ad which had a chimpanzee “actor” and has pledged not to use primates in advertising again!

Read the full announcement sent out to Primate Patrol members a few days ago.

Thank you to everyone who reaches out to these companies to let them know why they should not use chimpanzees and other primates in their advertisements. You are making a difference!

Chimpanzees and dolls

Thursday, December 23rd, 2010

Foxie’s not the only chimpanzee with a doll. In addition to countless examples of other captive apes carrying trolls, Sponge Bobs, and stuffed chimps, there is now evidence of wild chimpanzees treating sticks as dolls.

Knowing how intelligent and imaginative chimpanzees can be, this shouldn’t be surprising. But I can’t help being amazed. One young chimp was actually seen making a second nest, just for his doll…

the good, the bad and the snow

Thanks to Candy’s initiative on our Holiday Wishes post, it looks like we have $120 pledged towards the new MacBook. Having a new Mac really is essential for our blog, so we appreciate the pledges from Candy, Kathy B., Theresa and Catherine Mollyneaux! Please comment here or email me if you’d like to join in the pledges.

Sorry for the lack of posts for the last few days. On Thursday we had a crew out from a national magazine doing a story on Sarah. You’ll have to wait until February to find out which mag (if you know, don’t tell!)

On Friday and Saturday we were having technical difficulties with the old Mac as well as memory cards for the camera. Jackie and I were worried it was the beginning of the end for my old MacBook. It’s okay for the time being, but who knows how long it’s going to hold on. We do really immediately need a new  4 to 8 GB memory card. There’s one on our Amazon wishlist, if you want to snatch it up for us. We also got a foot of snow yesterday and I had to take off early from the chimp house to attempt to plow the driveway with the tractor (yikes!).

In other exciting news, our Board of Directors will be purchasing the new Cannon camera for us!! We are so excited! It’s going to make videos of the chimps on Young’s Hill possible and will add to our collection of great photos. We have the best board! Being on a board is serious business. Basically, they are responsible for the organization, which is a particularly big deal when talking about a sanctuary or other non-profit that cares for living beings. Having a strong board with lots of professional expertise is essential. And boy do we have it – just check them out on our Board of Directors page.

I promise we will post some photos or video later today.

Mack

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

Burrito’s father, Mack, passed away on Sunday at the estimated age of 46.

After spending decades in research, Mack was rescued by Save the Chimps and brought to live on a sunny island home in Florida. He died peacefully during an afternoon nap. Please take a minute to read about his life.

Our hearts go out to his human and chimpanzee families.

Rest in peace, Mack.

Dodge stands up for chimps

Wednesday, August 18th, 2010

If you’re a Primate Patrol member or follow the Primate Patrol page on Facebook, you know that Dodge recently altered their advertisement campaign which had included a chimpanzee named Suzie (Suzy).

Dodge took it a step further and released a powerful statement, which included these sentences:

Dodge is firmly committed to never using great apes in our advertisements again.

We are not a company that hides behind issues or brushes them under the rug. We are a company that meets issues head on and moves forward. And we promise to keep doing everything in our power to be one of the most honest and forward-thinking companies out there.”

This morning, Dodge published the link to their statement on their Facebook page. They have received a bit of flack from Dodge enthusiasts who clearly do not appreciate PETA, who Dodge mentions in their statement.

If you’re a Facebook user, please counter these folks by liking the Dodge Facebook page and politely thanking Dodge for indeed being a forward-thinking company on the issue of great apes in entertainment. Corporations can never make everyone happy, but we should praise them when they make compassionate decisions.

My Dodge Neon was the vehicle that Keith and J.B. drove from Pennsylvania to Cle Elum, following the Cle Elum Seven’s journey to freedom over two years ago. So now I have two big reasons to appreciate Dodge.
