Today is the day

Tuesday, September 20th, 2011

I can’t believe today is the day we get to see our chimpanzee friends step on grass for the first time.

Yesterday I looked at the 5′ x 3′ cage we have on the property. They lived in cages that size for decades. It’s impossible to put into words the sadness that small cage evokes. Then I looked at the 2 acre hill.

It might be a little scary for them at first, but the chimps are definitely ready for us to open the doors to the next chapter in their lives and put their pasts further behind them. We plan to set up a large lunch forage for them and open the doors around 11:00 (pacific time).

Its been heartwarming to see all of the posts that people have been sharing about the news on Facebook. It’s a privilege to be part of such a great community of people who care about chimpanzees and are as excited as we are to see the Cle Elum Seven step onto that hill.

A lot of people have been sharing the Young’s Hill video that Jonathan Houser made just a year ago when we were raising funds for the hill at our 2010 auction. I’ve included it below.

Thank you all.

Did you hear the NEWS??

Monday, September 19th, 2011

Tomorrow is the big day! We are all freaking out (in a good way). The chimps are ready, we’re ready and we know you are ready to see them out on the hill.

See the announcement about the big day.

Today, the final touches were put on the hill, including the concrete on what we are now calling the Treat Rock, which mimics a termite mound where the chimps can “fish” for treats we place in pipes mounted in the rock.

Workin’ hard

Wednesday, August 31st, 2011

Today J.B., Colin, and Noah worked on some Young’s Hill trench-digging around the entire perimeter. Here’s J.B. using what I have been calling “the crazy chainsaw for the ground” machine (though it’s actually called a ditch witch).

Trench-digging is also do-able with a pick ax and shovel, though I imagine it’s pretty hard work! Here’s Colin and Noah workin’ hard:

Missy’s birthday & foolish caregivers?

Saturday, August 20th, 2011

Missy’s birthday is this Tuesday, three days from now. Jackie and I were talking the other day about ways we could celebrate. Of course we’ll have a big party for Missy and the other chimps – Robbi and Dick have already delivered bags overflowing with awesome new toys and party supplies.

We had the Troll Olympics to celebrate Foxie’s birthday. Jackie and I were both there, but didn’t participate in the games because I was overseeing the events and Jackie was filming and taking photos. We both had a great time, but, to be honest, we were a little jealous of the participants.

So, we came up with a plan…. we will take pledges from blog readers in any amount for Missy Games.

If we get a total of $500 pledged, we will run a Missy obstacle course on Young’s Hill that J.B. will design for us. If we get $1,000 pledged, I’ll “run” around Young’s Hill on the outside of the fencing. If that doesn’t sound like a big deal, well, it is. The hill itself is really steep and it’s quite the distance for a non-athlete like me, but I should start getting in shape to prepare for games of chase with Missy!

We’re really going to be making fools out of ourselves, but with your support, and in honor of Missy’s athleticism and goofiness, we’re willing to do it.

You can pledge by commenting on this post or emailing me: diana@chimpsnw.org and jackie: jackie@chimpsnw.org.

We are planning our outfits already – sweatbands and socks that Missy would like are a must.

Jamie’s Quality Control

Monday, August 15th, 2011

Today J.B. worked on some welding on the new raceway that leads to Young’s Hill. Recently Jackie wrote about how it seems that the chimps definitely know what’s been going on the last few months, and mentions that J.B. watched Jamie try to get his attention and pull on the door a little, too. You’ll see some of that in this video. We are lucky to have such great quality control around here–Jamie is always making sure we did a good enough job!

Raceway!

Saturday, July 9th, 2011

Last night the chimps got the outdoor area back after being locked out for a couple of days while the raceway was under construction. Foxie was the most curious about the new door and door frame.

The raceway was actually constructed off-site using the caging that we removed when we replaced the caged windows with chimpanzee-proof glass. The welders had to make a hole in the current outdoor area and weld the raceway to it.

The new ladder (click on link to left for video of Jamie and Foxie’s reaction to the new ladder) has created a new space for Jamie to keep an eye on things:

Young’s Hill Update

Friday, June 17th, 2011

Our volunteers are amazing. Over the last two months, they’ve turned out every weekend and often during the week to help work on the hill despite the rain, wind, and sometimes frigid temperatures. Thanks to them, we’ve finished putting the posts in and have begun preparing the posts for the electric wire.

Currently, we are working on fastening the black plastic insulators to each post. They are fairly easy to install, but there are over 6,000 of them! Doug took materials home to finish making all of the brackets for the tops of the posts – our volunteers are even doing homework.

Sarah managed to photograph a rare moment when Anna was not working last weekend. Anna installed hundreds of insulators and got our irrigation system for the bamboo up and running.

The welders are almost finished with the gates and tunnels, and this weekend, volunteer Ken will begin digging the foundations for them. Below you can see the steel plates that will be embedded in the concrete to support the gate posts. This 8′ tall by 22′ wide section of fence will sit at the corner of the enclosure closest to the driveway. It will allow us to access the enclosure with a vehicle and, because the lower section will not be electrified, it will be the main place where caregivers can interact with the chimps when they are out on the hill.

Volunteers have also been helping with quality control to ensure that all playground equipment meets Missy’s standards.

Fence posts and other excitement on the hill

Sunday, June 5th, 2011

Thanks to a great volunteer crew yesterday, all but 15 of the remaining posts on Young’s Hill are in place!

This was not easy work because we had some rain over the last few weeks which filled up the holes, so yesterday’s volunteers, Kim S., Rita, Kim C., Donna, Kelly, and Bill, were not afraid to get dirty. I asked Kim S. how she managed to get dirt on her shoulders and found out it was because she was head-first in the 4-foot holes bailing water out.

Speaking of fence posts, there are only 26 posts left to “adopt” – check out all of the wonderful fence post plaque inscriptions on our 3rd Anniversary Fundraising page. Thanks to everyone who has joined in on this fundraising campaign!

In other really exciting news, the bamboo on the hill is shooting!!

I promised J.B. I would help him set the remaining 15 posts today, so I had better get out there, but here are some photos I took last night on hill:

Something new

I don’t think Foxie trusts my welding skills.
