Window installation day

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

Window installation day was last Friday, so the chimps had to be locked out of the playroom for the entire day. I did all I could to keep them busy so they wouldn’t get too bored or anxious during the construction, though they really didn’t seem to mind and were pretty interested to see what was happening. I put out tons of raisin boards, prepared by volunteers Jennifer & Larry the day before, which kept them busy for a while.

Burrito seemed pretty sure there was no better place to be that day than sitting in the window in the outdoor area looking into the playroom.

He even spied on the workers by looking at them in a mirror.

He doesn’t have a lot of guy friends, after all…

Missy checking out the construction: (Doesn’t she look young in this picture?!)

And the next day, the chimps finally got to take a look out their new clear picture window.

And of course, Negra:

What an awesome birthday gift!

Yesterday was such a wonderful day! Thank you so much to everyone who made the day possible! CSNW has the best supporters and volunteers!

happy anniversary and thank you

Sunday, June 13th, 2010

We really can’t thank you enough for following the lives of the Cle Elum Seven chimpanzees and helping to fill their new lives with love and happiness.

The last two years have been remarkable.

This video is for you:

Breakfast forage!

Saturday, June 5th, 2010

Summer has been slow to come to Cle Elum, but today was beautiful, so we set up a breakfast forage first thing. Included were frozen strawberries, grapes, chow biscuits, nuts,  smoothie in cups and fresh blades of grass. Everyone went for their favorites among the choices – Foxie for the grapes, Burrito for the chow biscuits, Jamie and Jody for the strawberries, Missy for smoothie, Annie for grass, and Negra for the nuts (while picking up grass for later).

Sperm Competition

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

If you watched the video from the previous blog post, you may have some questions about a certain part of the male chimpanzee anatomy. Think of this post as Everything You Wanted to Know About Chimp Testicles, But Were Afraid to Ask.

Burrito is not unique – male chimpanzees have rather large testicles compared to other apes. And there’s a very interesting explanation for this. Most people are familiar with the concept of males competing for access to females. For example, male gorillas will compete for control over a harem of females – whoever controls the harem has primary mating access. But female chimpanzees will regularly mate with multiple males during estrus (see this recent article for an interesting take on chimp mating behavior). Therefore, much of the competition between males takes place between their sperm within the female’s reproductive tract.

If you think of mating as a lottery, with the prize being a fertilized egg, then whoever can produce the most sperm is essentially buying the most lottery tickets. And whoever has more tickets has a better chance of winning. There are also other forms of sperm competition besides this sperm “arms race”. Chimpanzees also produce sperm plugs (also called copulatory plugs). After mating, some of the semen will coagulate to plug up the cervix, so that sperm from future mating (with other males) will be less likely to reach the egg.

So for chimpanzees, it pays to produce a lot of semen, and that requires large testicles. Now you know!

Playful Burrito

Despite the rainy weather, the playfulness at CSNW continues!

accidental enrichment

Saturday, May 15th, 2010

Today was “fill the tub with water” day. We thought it would be fun to throw some of the forage in the tub. Apparently we do not know much about the buoyancy of fruit, because we figured grape tomatoes would float. They sank right to the bottom, and this turned into “accidental” enrichment for Missy and Jamie.

P.S. Thank you to Tamela for the sturdy tubs!
