Sarah on the subject of healing

Friday, March 5th, 2010

A few weeks ago, two very special people from Seattle’s NPR station visited the sanctuary and interviewed Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest’s Executive Director, Sarah Baeckler. The interview and audio from their visit will air on KUOW Presents on 94.9 FM tomorrow at 2:06pm. Please listen to it live if you’re in the area.

You can also listen to it, subscribe to the KUOW Presents podcast, or download the interview from their website right now. It’s a very moving piece, and I hope you’ll be inspired to contact KUOW to comment, and encourage them to re-air it as frequently as they can. You will learn a lot about Sarah in the interview and why she does what she does for chimpanzees.

White Bean Paté

Bruschetta bar featuring the following tapenades: tomoto basil, wild mushroom, and marinated artichoke with roasted red bell pepper

Hummus and crudité

I am hungry already…

Come to this talk with Debra Durham tonight! I’ll be there and will talk about the sanctuary to attendees.

Primatologist Debra Durham, Ph.D., will discuss her work with chimpanzee sanctuaries in Washington and around the world. She’ll also explain why we need to urge Sen. Maria Cantwell to support the Great Ape Protection Act (GAPA), a bill that would prohibit invasive research on chimpanzees and release about 500 chimpanzees to sanctuaries.gapa handout

CSNW featured in Seattle Metropolitan Magazine

Friday, November 20th, 2009

Really great article: http://www.seattlemet.com/issues/archives/articles/chimpanzee-sanctuary-northwest-1209/

It’s hot off the presses (or at least recently uploaded to the world wide web) and the print version should be all over the Seattle area soon. Please share on your Facebook and Twitter pages and send to all of your contacts (you can do that by clicking “Email” or “Share This” at the top of the article when you go to the link). It not only tells the story of CSNW, but also the broader plight of chimpanzees in captivity.

I only wish Jamie knew how famous she is.

On the radio

Friday, November 6th, 2009

Arik Korman, the director of 102.5 KZOK’s The Bob Rivers Show, recently visited the sanctuary. Arik has shared a podcast full of great questions, a dramatic intro and some terrific audio of the chimpanzees food grunting (in the beginning) and Jamie displaying (toward the end).

You can learn more about the sanctuary and chimpanzees by listening to the podcast linked to below or hear it broadcast on KZOK this Sunday in the 6am hour, KJAQ in the 7am hour and on AM 1090 in the 11am hour.

Blankets needed at WAO

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

Wild Animal Orphanage (also known as Animal Sanctuary of the United States) is a sanctuary in San Antonio, Texas under new leadership. They are currently seeking donations to help their animals and prepare for the winter. WAO is home to former biomedical research chimpanzees, some of whom J.B. and I met on a visit to the sanctuary in 2001.

CSNW is fortunate to have a wonderful support network that has provided the Cle Elum Seven with an abundance of some of the items on the WAO wishlist. So, instead of sending your blankets, clothes, sheets and towels to us, please send them to WAO for the chimpanzees, smaller primates, and other animals living there – they need you too! They have posted their wishlist on the homepage of their website: www.wildanimalorphanage.org

Apron Activists benefit dinner

Friday, October 16th, 2009

The Apron Activists, made up of the wonderful folks at the vegan mini-mall in Portland, OR (SweetPea Baking Company, Food Fight, Herbivore, Scape Goat Tatoo) and Isa Chandra Moskowitz, chef and author of the best vegan cookbooks out there, are putting on a benefit dinner for the sanctuary Friday night in PDX.

The dinner is sold out, but don’t let that stop you from drooling over the menu. Check it out on the Post Punk Kitchen blog, and browse some of the great recipes while you’re there.

I’ll see you there if you managed to get your ticket before it was sold out!
