Find out what the chimpanzees are wishing for in 2012:

B’s day

Friday, December 30th, 2011

Burrito’s birthday is just a week away! Let’s make Mr. B’s-day super great. Find out how you can become Burrito’s Pal, or Sponsor his B-day! His favorite thing in the world is food—of all kinds. Here’s a few photos of B’s cute food face:

And we can never forget Burrito’s pumpkin head from this year’s Halloween party:

Jamie helps clean up

Thursday, December 29th, 2011

As we’ve mentioned before, Jamie is particularly human-oriented. (Read this post from the first week Jamie was in sanctuary). She definitely watches us do things and will do them in her own style later. Jamie also likes to check up on any kind of work that’s been done and once she’s given access to a room that was previously closed off for maintenance, she will rush in to give her quality control tests.

In the first part of this video, you’ll see her cleaning up a recent paint job in one of the front rooms. We are replacing the benches, so you’ll see some primer on the wall in the spot where the bench used to be. In the second part of the video, Jamie is scrubbing a notably hard-to-reach spot. Clearly I did not do a good enough cleaning job! But I’m so glad to have Jamie’s help.

Holiday Celebrations

Wednesday, December 28th, 2011

The celebrations continue at the sanctuary!

A lot of people have helped make all of the fun happen – including those who gave through our Holiday Gift Store.

Debbie put together a holiday recap of the festivities so far. Watch below. The chimpanzees thank you!

The Silent Sacredness of Young’s Hill

Tuesday, December 27th, 2011

It’s still amazing for the humans to see the chimpanzees on the two-acre hill, so we’re often silent too as we watch…

Tangerine forage

Monday, December 26th, 2011

For the big Christmas celebration yesterday, Diana, Elizabeth, and Seana put out some tangerines on Young’s Hill in addition to the ones strung on the Christmas tree. However I guess the chimps were too excited about the big party inside that they didn’t really go out and forage for the tangerines yesterday. So today, they were still hanging out there, frozen for sure. I decided to leave them because I know how excited the chimps get about frozen fruit. Turns out that Jamie was pretty much the only one willing to brave the cold for any length of time, so she ended up with lots frozen tangerines to herself!

Foxie quickly came out and grabbed one tangerine while Jamie was working on some by the bamboo:

Jamie decided to eat her collection in the warmth of the greenhouse.

Best Christmas Ever

Sunday, December 25th, 2011

It’s been a very merry Christmas here at CSNW.  The chimpanzees started the day with a special Christmas breakfast of peanut butter rice balls, bananas, and smoothie.  After the playroom was cleaned, the real party began – complete with whole pomegranates and tangerines, new toys and blankets from friends Robbi and Dick Brown, Leslie Sodaro, and Joanne Pierce, and a Christmas tree decorated with popcorn and peanut strings and troll dolls.

Aside from the pomegranates, the tree might have been the star of the day.  Diana had the idea to suspend it a couple of feet off the ground, so it spun festively whenever someone touched it.  Burrito, in particular, seemed quite taken with it, as you’ll see below.

For Julie and Rob Sweet from Vern and Jean Bengston

Sunday, December 25th, 2011

Vern and Jean Bengston have sponsored today in honor of Julie and Rob Sweet. The chimpanzees are currently enjoying breakfast and excitedly waiting for us to finish cleaning the playroom so today’s party can begin! We’re so grateful to everyone who donates so we can continue to provide the chimps with everything they deserve.

Here’s Negra enjoying last year’s festivities:

The case of the droopy lip

Friday, December 23rd, 2011

Jody almost always has a drooped lip when she’s out on the hill. We’ve been referring to it as her “Young’s Hill Face”

Today, her droopy lip seemed to be mixed in with a bit of a sneer. Sometimes I sneer when I’m cold!

She sure does have a beautiful face though…
