The online auction raised $19,771. Combine that with our Seattle Out of the Box event and a $200 donation that came since the tally I gave yesterday plus individual sponsors which were not included in that tally and we have (drum-roll, please….) $147,712. And that is the amount raised minus expenses! Thank you to everyone who participated, volunteered and gave to help the chimps. What a huge success! Photos of the Seattle event coming soon.

WOW Again
Monday, October 10th, 2011Online Auction Ends Tonight
Sunday, October 9th, 2011We would love to follow the success of the Seattle Out of the Box 2011 event by reaching our $20,000 goal for the online auction. We have $3,826 to go in just six hours and 30 minutes. So far we have $1,192 toward the on-site medical clinic through the online auction. This is the best way to give back to the chimps – you can donate in any amount. Do it for Negra!
Although several were snatched up fast, there are still plenty of items available to bid, including a five-night stay at the Ihilani Resort in O’ahu, a private tour of the sanctuary that includes dinner with the staff and an overnight stay, limited edition signed prints of the Philip Herman illustration The Chimps on Young’s Hill (only four left in the auction), a week-long stay on Grand Cayman Island, an opportunity to be a virtual caregiver to the Cle Elum Seven for a whole day, a two-day pass to the Northwest Yoga Conference, and copies of Troll Mania, A Comfy Home and Present Moment, Perfect Moment with photos of the chimpanzees at the sanctuary. On the auction site are the last remaining copies of these books in hardback – no more hardback versions will be printed, so get them now!

Success and fun
Saturday, October 8th, 2011Total raised through the Seattle Out of the Box auction = $125,991, including the $5,000 that Kathy Cochran donated from a distance that kicked off the fund-a-need for the medical clinic and the $20,000 from the Youngs that was matched by the audience last night. What other word can I use but WOW?!
And the online auction is still going! New items were added this morning.
See you tonight!
Friday, October 7th, 2011Tonight is the Out of the Box gala auction! This is going to be a phenomenal event with so many different things to bid on. There’s going to be a multitude of items in the silent auction, including impressive and beautiful handmade art pieces, great deals on local restaurants and other businesses, and amazing wine packages. The live auction features tons of fun getaways and even a private tour of the sanctuary. Buy a raffle ticket to get a chance to win a live auction item of your choice! You can also contribute by adopting a caregiver, and help sustain the sanctuary’s operating costs at the Do it Now board. I’m really excited and hope you are too!
This year’s Fund-a-Need item is probably our most important item yet. We want to open an on-site medical clinic, so that in case the chimps need medical care, they will get to wake up next to family. Do it for Negra!
And don’t forget about the online auction, which opened up for bidding this morning! It will just go until Sunday, so hurry up and place your bids quick! This is a great way for long-distance supporters to take part in the Out of the Box auction. (And for local attendees, too—there’s items available online that won’t be available tonight!)
An accomplishment
Thursday, October 6th, 2011Jody’s adventures on/with the hill have been so exciting and fascinating to watch. After the initial excitement of the grand opening of Young’s Hill was over, Jody went back into the outdoor area and stayed there. She monitored the activities on the hill daily, often standing in the raceway tunnel waiting for everyone to come in, and closely inspecting folks upon their return. It took a long time, but once she gained the courage to go out- she went way out! She walked the entire perimeter, exploring every inch of the hill. It was spectacular to watch!
What really struck me while watching her out there was how much she looked back towards the building and the rest of the property. She really seemed fascinated to see parts of the property that she hadn’t seen before- including her home for the last 3+ years. I can’t imagine how strange it would be to live in a house for years and not know what the place looks like from the outside. And after all this time, it must be really satisfying to finally be able to see inside the barn or the garden in it’s entirety, the mountains in the distance, and even just further down the driveway…
I’m so inspired and in awe watching the chimps explore the great unknown and to see their amazing confidence and courage. It makes me not only proud of the chimps, but so proud of this sanctuary. The way I see it- it’s such a huge change from anything they’ve ever known that the chimps really have to trust us to feel comfortable out there. They have to believe that we are taking care of them and that we are still protecting them in this big open space. I feel so proud of our team when I see the chimps out there– and so grateful to our supporters! Just like Jody, it’s a huge accomplishment- we did it! It’s such an amazing thing and definitely something for all to be proud of.
Nightline did not air chimps
Thursday, October 6th, 2011Footage of the chimpanzees going out onto Young’s Hill was scheduled to air on Nightline. The death of Steve Jobs, however, caused a change in their programming and they dedicated the whole show to covering this news and his life.
We don’t know if the story will air on Good Morning America in the morning – it’s possible that it will get bumped as well because the primary story was to air on Nightline first. We will keep you posted when we hear of a new air date for the chimp story.
Jody’s exploring
Wednesday, October 5th, 2011If you checked the blog a couple days ago, you’ll know that Jody and Foxie are making some big steps toward finding their place out on Young’s Hill. Well, as I mentioned on her Facebook page, yesterday Jody decided to start exploring all on her own! She even skipped lunch entirely to check out nearly every inch of the enclosure.
When I think about how the chimps must feel about the open space we’ve given them, I imagine they must feel so many different emotions—joy, excitement, fear, anxiety, curiosity, and so many more I’m sure. After living behind steel bars for over 3 decades, it’s fairly overwhelming to step out into grass and open sky.
I was in front of the tunnel yesterday (while cleaning Young’s Hill to get it ready for the chimps) and I was able to see how things are from their perspective. Although Young’s Hill is an enclosure, when you first leave the tunnel it does not feel that way.
Jody was captured from Africa and put into a cage, so it’s really awesome and inspiring to see her gain the confidence to step out into the unknown.
Sometimes you need a little push
Monday, October 3rd, 2011We know that some of the chimps seem completely comfortable with Young’s Hill, especially Missy, as well as Jamie. Annie has gotten more brave with help from Missy, and Burrito and Negra have ventured out for a little bit, too. Jody and Foxie are more hesitant and have only been a few feet past the raceway tunnel. Today, Jamie encouraged both of them to come out further and even hugged Foxie and guided her along.
Fearless Missy
Sunday, October 2nd, 2011I know we’ve said it before, but Missy has been quite a star on Young’s Hill. She’s been so confident and fearless out there! We knew she would love the Hill, but I don’t think any of us could have predicted the level of bravery she would have. I’m so proud of her! GO MISSY GO!
Happy Birthday, Anne Roberson!
Sunday, October 2nd, 2011Mary Ann Baltich has sponsored this day of sanctuary in honor of Anne Roberson’s birthday. It’s a fitting gift for someone who generously supports the chimps monthly through our Chimpanzee Pal program (Anne sponsors Annie). Mary Ann, Annie, and all of us at CSNW wish you the happiest of birthdays, Anne!
Here’s Annie celebrating her own birthday a few weeks ago:
