A Few of the Out of the Box Art Pieces

Friday, September 30th, 2011

Only a few days left to get tickets to Out of the Box 2011!

We have some really tremendous art in the auction this year! Big thanks to Jessie Johnson who headed up the art procurement. She and all procurement volunteers really outdid themselves this year.

These are just a few pieces:

Cosca I is a signed and numbered limited edition serigraph (certification included) by Victor Varsarely, leader of the Op-Art movement. It will be in “Negra’s Favorite Things” section of the silent auction. You can download a full list of silent auction items and preview live auction items on our auction preview page.

We have a few quilts in the auction this year – each one unique. One, made by Jodi Davila, is in the online auction. See her blue and yellow quilt and browse all online auction items (still more to add).

Here’s a gorgeous quilt that will be in the the “Annie & Missy: Girls Just Want to Have Fun” section of the silent auction in Seattle. The quilt was lovingly handmade by blog reader Annie Nordmark and is called Squares ²:

Tamela has made some  gorgeous necklaces this year. Two of them, Mr. B and In the Wild are in the online auction and two are in the Seattle auction.

Below is Tamela’s Miss Missy, which is also in the “Annie & Missy: Girls Just Want to Have Fun” section of the silent auction in Seattle:

We have some amazingly talented supporters and volunteers! Here is a photo of a mirror with a beautiful hand-painted frame made by Volunteer Stephanie Perciful. You’ll find it in the “Burrito’s Corner” section of the silent auction (Burrito LOVES Stephanie):

Stephanie's mirror

Volunteer Seana Blake has created one-of-a-kind three-dimensional collages using enrichment well-loved by the chimpanzees (and one piece she created from discarded fence construction bits and other pieces of found metal objects).

There are five pieces by Seana total. I can’t decide what my favorite is, but it might be the one below called “Trolls are Delicious.” This will be up for bid, where else but the “Trollin’ with Foxe” section of the silent auction:

Trolls are Delicious

Margaret Parkinson has donated several prints of her artwork this year, including one print of her now famous Negra in the Sun (the original painting sold at the 2009 auction). You’ll find this in the “Trollin’ with Foxie” section of the silent auction too. And you can find a couple of other prints by Margaret in the online auction.

And speaking of this image, just added to the CSNW store is the greatest sweatshirt ever made. It’s a unisex hoodie made by Alternative Earth and is super-soft, mega-comfortable and has an image taken from the same photograph that inspired Margaret’s painting above. It’s not as gorgeously colorful as Margaret’s, but it’s pretty cool. The company that makes the blank sweatshirts, Alternative Apparel, retails them for $50, so getting the sweatshirt with Negra’s image for the same price is a bargain! Buy one now - you don’t want to go through the fall months without one of these hoodies – trust me. Here’s a photo of Sarah wearing a size medium:

First few days out

Thursday, September 29th, 2011

I know all our regular blog readers have been waiting to see some more video of the chimps out on Young’s Hill. If you haven’t yet, watch this video from KOMO News that shows their first moments out (but have some tissue close by!) This montage is of highlights from the following days. Enjoy!

In other news (and what you can do)…

Wednesday, September 28th, 2011

There is a whole lot going on in the world of chimps right now! Here are a few highlights for your further reading, education, and advocacy:

Scientific American just published an editorial calling for an end to biomedical experimentation on chimpanzees. The editors reference a study conducted in part here at CSNW demonstrating that chimpanzees experience signs of post traumatic stress disorder and anxiety disorder, among other things, after being used as test subjects.

The Great Ape Protection and Cost Savings Act (S. 810/HR.1513) , which CSNW formally supports, and introduced in the Senate by our very own Senator Maria Cantwell, would phase out the use of chimpanzees in invasive testing over three years. If you think that’s a good idea, be sure to lend your voice to the cause.

The United States Fish and Wildlife Service is re-considering the issue of the chimpanzee “split listing” under the Endangered Species Act. There’s a complex history here, but the short version is that there is a special rule in effect which completely excludes captive chimpanzees from any protection under the Endangered Species Act. The record behind that decision is questionable at best. Reclassifying captive chimpanzees as endangered would eliminate the special rule and go a long way toward adding protection for our captive chimpanzee friends. The USFWS has called for public comment on this – you can submit your comments here.

As we’ve written about before, a group of chimpanzees living in Alamogordo, NM were slated by the federal government to move from their facility (where no research was being conducted) back into research. Although 14 chimpanzees had already been moved, including Jody’s son Levi, the remainder of the group were given a temporary reprieve after public outcry and pending the outcome of further federal investigation.

At the request of the National Institutes of Health, the Institute of Medicine formed a committee charged with coming up with a report on whether chimpanzees are or will be necessary for biomedical research.  The committee is accepting ongoing public comment here, and is expected to issue its report by the end of this year. The Washington Post did a write up after the most recent meeting of the committee. One of the most compelling pieces of information that came out of the last meeting? The FDA has a policy not to request data from chimpanzee studies, and it discourages submission of such data.

Finally (for now) a petition submitted to the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (under the USDA) seeks an investigation into the decision that sent Levi and his 13 companions back into research.

There are so many balls in the air right now, it really does feel like the tides are turning. Please share your voice where you can!

The Scale of Things

Tuesday, September 27th, 2011

If you watched the raw video on the KOMO News site, you heard both J.B. and I remark on how small everyone looked on Young’s Hill when they went out. I thought I’d show a few photos that capture that.

The chimps weren’t on the hill today. A couple of bugs in the system presented themselves the other day. J.B. is waiting on some parts to make sure things are running 100% smoothly and is making some other additions while he’s waiting. Since the fence is new to us and to the chimps, we’re being overly cautious and not letting the chimps back on the hill until we have everything worked out. They should be back out early next week. The weather’s been kind of drizzly anyway, so the chimps don’t seem too put off by having some rain days inside and in the covered outdoor area.

We took a LOT of photos and some video over the last week- so we’ll keep sharing!

KOMO 4 News Broadcast

Monday, September 26th, 2011

Watch the broadcast footage that was aired on Seattle’s KOMO News last night and will air again tonight at 6pm: http://www.komonews.com/news/local/130546448.html

Thanks to Eric Johnson for reporting and Eric Jensen and Sara Givens for filming!

P.S. J.B. Mulcahy hasn’t changed his last name – it was just a little mistake. We are married, but have different last names.

Out of the Box Auction Preview

Sunday, September 25th, 2011

Tickets are still available for the 2011 Out of the Box auction. We won’t be selling tickets at the door, so you really need to get yours now! This event is going to be so amazing!

Preview the live auction items, download a list of all the silent auction items, and register for the online auction on the auction preview page.

I’m loving the live auction line-up we have this year! – there’s definitely something for everyone  – from the Burrito special-label wine to getaways to Best Friends Sanctuary, Hawaii, New Zealand, California, Colorado, Fiji and the UK plus one and two night stays at hotels in Seattle, Vancouver and Portland.  All that and gift certificates for some of the best restaurants in Seattle, a year of tickets to the Showbox, plus three unique, limited edition hardback books of photos of the Cle Elum Seven. In addition to the Fund-a-Need to raise money for the medical clinic, we’ll also have an opportunity to “adopt” the CSNW caregivers.

And that’s just part of the live auction! The silent auction is just as exciting, with one-of-a-kind art pieces, tickets to Disneyland, a brand new red electric guitar, jewelry, wine, Segway tours, yoga, kayaking, spas, massage, LUSH gift boxes, tickets to concerts and concert venues, more restaurant gift certificates and much, much more. Check it all out on the preview page.

The simple things

Sunday, September 25th, 2011

There are so many beautiful stories to tell about these first few days of Young’s Hill- it’s been an exciting time for all of us- but sometimes it’s the simplest things that move me. Seeing blue skies behind them and the sunlight shining on their backs, no caging surrounding them, and the incredible view they get to enjoy. It is an amazing thing to see.

KOMO News posted some of the raw footage of the chimps going onto the hill!! We can’t wait to see the edited story tonight at 11pm and tomorrow at 6pm. In the meantime – watch this: http://www.komonews.com/home/video/130471343.html

Go Annie!

Saturday, September 24th, 2011

Annie followed Missy right out this morning and made it to a couple of the climbing structures.

Annie didn’t quite make it over to the gate to get breakfast served outside before she decided to go back in, but we had breakfast for her there too.

Reassurance

Friday, September 23rd, 2011

As I mentioned earlier, we’ve been putting forages out on the hill to encourage the chimps to go out. Negra will do anything for lettuce, so we’ve been using trails of lettuce leaves to lead her across the log bridge to the lowest platform. Tonight she climbed to the top of the platform for what I think was the first time.

On her way back she heard something that startled her. Determined to stay with her lettuce, she sought reassurance from a caregiver from afar, and then from Jamie who approached from below.

Negra amazes me. Imagine the courage that it takes to venture out into the wide open after living 35+ years in cages scarcely bigger than your own body. I am thrilled to see her on that hill.
