202 Chimpanzees update

Friday, August 13th, 2010

Watch this recent interview with New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson, who just might be my new favorite person: http://apnm.org/news_current_events/2010/govrichardson_koat.php

If you’re in New Mexico, watch KNME at 7:00pm tonight for “New Mexico in Focus.” For those not in New Mexico, the show will be made available online after the weekend.

The KNME show will include a panel discussion about the Alamogordo Primate Facility chimpanzees who are slated to move to a laboratory in San Antonio, Texas. The panel includes State Representative Nate Cote, University of New Mexico Professor Dr. John Gluck, and Animal Protection of New Mexico’s Laura Bonar.

Included in the group of 202 chimpanzees in Alamogordo are Jody, Foxie and Negra’s children. Jody’s son Levi has already been transferred to Texas.

Much of this information comes from the latest update from Animal Protection of New Mexico.  Read the entire update here: http://apnm.org/mailbox/aug13_1_10.html We are so grateful to APNM for continuing to work on helping these chimpanzees and for keeping us all informed and letting us know how we can help.

We need your vote!

Help us win $5,000. Vote for us now. You can only vote once.

We have submitted as idea for the Justmeans $20,000 Digital Paperless Fundraising Challenge. As you know, we do almost all of our fundraising through our blog and social networking sites – no paper needed, thanks to you! One of our supporters alerted us to this contest for organizations doing just that – raising money without the direct-mail, paper-heavy approach.

We’re perfect for the contest and we have a strong submission focused on our recent Anniversary Fundraising. But we need your votes to get us back in the lead.

We want to win the $5,000 grand prize!

Please vote today and ask all of your friends to vote too. It only takes a minute to sign up and cast your vote for the chimps. You can only vote once, so if you’ve already voted – thank you!

Gene Hackman helping the Alamogordo Chimpanzees

Thursday, August 12th, 2010

So far the NIH has not budged on their plans to transfer 202 chimpanzees from the Alamogordo Primate Facility to the Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research.

The chimpanzees have gotten some celebrity support recently, though – Gene Hackman wrote a letter to the head of NIH asking to halt this transfer.  Check out this excerpt from his letter (it gave me chills in a good way):

“As you know, efforts to save the Alamogordo chimpanzee have drawn support from Gov. Bill Richardson, Sen. Tom Udall, and many other people around the state and across the country. I join them in urging you to fulfill the National Institutes of Health’s goal to ‘exemplify and promote the highest level of scientific integrity, public accountability, and social responsibility in the conduct of science’ by allowing these chimpanzees to live out their lives in the safety of a sanctuary.”

Read the full letter here: http://pcrm.org/resch/alamogordo/hackman.html

If you haven’t already, please contact the government about this issue. Your tax money is funding the laboratory housing and future experimentation on these chimpanzees.

Felicty Day Cinco

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

Today is the fifth in a series of Felicity Days.

For her birthday this year, Felicity Wood did a great job of convincing her loved ones to donate to the sanctuary instead (or perhaps in addition to?) giving her birthday gifts. So, we are celebrating Felicity several days throughout the year. Today’s day is from Jinny & Darby, Felicity’s two Old English Sheepdogs. We’re not sure how they expressed what day they wanted to honor Felicity, but we suspect they’ll get an extra long walk today as a thank you for their generosity.

Happy Felicity Day Cinco from Negra! (this is one of Felicity’s favorite photos):

Check out the Sponsor-a-Day calendar and pick a day for honoring a loved one, celebrating a special day in your life, or just let people know you’d like a couple of Sponsor-a-Days in your honor this year.

What big teeth you have

Tuesday, August 10th, 2010

Here’s a nice example of why you would never want to be bitten by a chimpanzee. It may look like Foxie is threatening to kill her troll doll, but I simply caught her in the middle of a yawn.

This photo also shows how chimpanzees – even tiny chimpanzees like Foxie – are able to fit so much food into their mouths. I have seen Foxie stuff eighteen pieces of monkey chow into her mouth at once (each piece is about the size of a walnut in the shell).

Don’t forget to donate $34 for Foxie’s 34th birthday to get a fun surprise in your inbox!

Foxie’s party post #2

Sunday, August 8th, 2010

We put out tons of mirrors today because Foxie sometimes makes good use of them. But Jody was the one excited about them this morning!

I was very excited to capture this angle:

It’s not too late to make a $34 donation in Foxie’s honor today – you’ll get something fun in your inbox in return!

Foxie’s Party – Post #1

Sunday, August 8th, 2010

We’re having a fun day here! We set up Foxie’s birthday party this morning outside. Of course there were many MANY trolls to distribute (including new ones from Stephanie P. and Kathy and Rob D.), troll print material from Candy C, incredible gift bags with all kinds of goodies from Robbi and Dick, and fruit fruit fruit for breakfast. Foxie is not a big fan of veggies so we’ve declared today a fruit-only day. Here are a few pictures of the party-goers.Video and some cool Jody pictures will be posted later on today so check back!

Oh, and, we’re doing a little impromptu fundraiser for Ms. Foxie. Donate at least $34 (one dollar for each of her years!) today and you’ll get a special treat in your inbox. I’m not telling what it is!
