Jody definitely competes for Negra as our most serious chimp. However, I guess I think of Negra as a mother-figure of the group, rather than just serious. She's more serene than serious, I think. Hard to say which is more serious... And you can definitely tell Foxie toned down her playing when she was playing with Jody. It seemed she was very unsure as to Jody's intentions.... :)

As for playfaces-- sometimes chimps display a playface during play, sometimes they don't. And for Jody, it's fairly rare to see her with a playface. But you'll notice Foxie made sure to keep her playface on when she started playing with Jody- probably as a signal to keep it playful, instead of it turning into something else. Smart cookie!!

I noticed in Jody's scene she didn't display a 'play face', is that unusual?

It's so interesting to watch the more playful chimps interact with the more serious chimps (Jody, Negra). It's obvious they're moderating their physicality in order to not scare or hurt others.

The evidence of their compassion is pretty amazing.
