I’ll be behind the CSNW table at PAWSwalk 2009 tomorrow. Be sure to stop and say hello! I love this event – so many wonderful dogs and their human companions raising money for a good cause. I can’t think of a better way to spend a Saturday morning.

“Let Freedom Swing”
Wednesday, September 9th, 2009Let Freedom Swing can be yours! Artist Tamela Burgess created a beautiful hand-crafted necklace celebrating the Cle Elum Seven’s release to sanctuary. We want to make this one-of-a-kind, truly amazing auction donation available to all chimpanzee supporters, not just those who can attend the Celebrate the Seven auction. So, it will be given to the first person who lets me know that they will pay the guaranteed bid price of $1270.
Tamela spent a great deal of time working on this piece and used the finest materials. Here is her description, “The pendant is made of fine silver and is 3″x2.” The painted clay inclusion depicts a young juvenile chimpanzee swinging in the trees of his or her African homeland. I also used Kazuri ceramic beads and Krobo recycled glass beads from Africa. CSNW means so much to me and I’ve been working really hard to create something special for the auction.” The necklace is approximately 18in long.
Tamela even included a display box and – get this! – a book of photographs illustrating and describing the process of making the necklace. We were all blown away. It is a beautiful piece by a beautiful person. See the photos below and fall in love like we did. Email me right away when you decide you can’t live without it: diana@chimpsanctuarynw.org
It will be available up until the auction date, Oct. 2nd or until it goes to the lucky person who makes the guaranteed bid.
Annie’s first birthday
Tuesday, September 8th, 2009This Thursday is Annie’s birthday! We don’t know the actual day of Annie’s birth, so we picked a date for her. And because we hadn’t picked one by this time last year, this will be her first birthday at the sanctuary.
So even though she’s turning 35, you can wish Annie a Happy First Birthday!
Here are a couple of photos of the soon-to-be birthday girl, taken this afternoon.

Mirror Day
Monday, September 7th, 2009I have unofficially dubbed today as mirror day. I managed to catch Burrito, Jamie, and Missy all checking themselves (and me!) out in plastic mirrors!

Rainy Day Enrichment
Sunday, September 6th, 2009It is a rainy day today, so to entertain the chimps, we gave them toothbrushes. The activity may have been more appropriately called toothbrush sucking than toothbrushing, since most of the chimps were more interested in the toothpaste than in brushing their teeth. However, I was able to get a quick brush of Foxie’s teeth. I would say the chimps were pretty enriched!
Art for chimp’s sake
Saturday, September 5th, 2009I am SO excited about the donations that we have for our Celebrate the Seven auction (Buy tickets)
In addition to some incredible getaway packages, wine excursions and bottles of wine, restaurant gift certificates, and tons of fun, fun stuff, we have art that was donated specifically for this auction. Many pieces are illustrations and paintings of chimpanzees, including the Cle Elum Seven. Below are just a few.
In a few days, I will post a one-of-a-kind necklace made by CSNW supporter Tamela – it will absolutely blow you away.
Be sure to get your tickets today and tell others about the auction! You can also spread the event through Facebook.
Margaret Parkinson’s 12x12in painting, “Negra in the Sun”
I have seen this in person and attendees are going to have to outbid me for this piece

Colin Redmon’s illustration of Jamie
Colin has been working for the past several months on ink illustrations of all seven of the chimpanzees for the auction – all of which are breathtaking.

Sally-Anne Ryan’s 24x20in painting, “Foxie and the Troll”
UK based artist Sally-Anne Ryan has an incredible talent for creating chimpanzee paintings:
Linda Griffin’s “Beautiful Hero” painting of Negra
Linda contacted us months ago about donating something for the auction. I had no idea the outcome would be so wonderful!

Tool use
Thursday, September 3rd, 2009Today after lunch Jamie spotted a slice of onion that had fallen on the human side of the caging, and grabbed a hose and a pair of sunglasses to help pull it closer.
