There are a handful of species who have demonstrated self-recognition, and chimpanzees are among this handful. Of the Cle Elum Seven, Foxie in particular enjoys mirrors.

Foxie, you are a hoot!! I love the mouth action and then to check out her bum. I was laughing my head off. I did wonder where her trolls were. Thanks Diana. You captured the moment well.
Foxie must have been reading “Our Bodies Ourselves”! (Only women around in the 70s will know what I mean!)
Foxie had a really droopy lower lip going on there, I don’t think I’ve ever seen her with one that droopy. Diana, doesn’t a droopy lower lip mean “she’s very relaxed’?
Amazing!!!! And you know I think she knows she’s looking good! That clap at the end = “I’m one beautiful chimp!!”
Diana… how do you keep yourself from laughing out loud??
yes, she is one beautiful chimp…………..
Candace – a drooped lip does normally indicate relaxation. We’re calling this Foxie’s “mirror face” – I’ve never seen her make such an exaggerated drooped lip face except when looking in a mirror.
Gayle – J.B. was taking the video and I was holding the mirror, so we were silent. We do try to not laugh “at” the chimps, and when we do laugh, we try to use chimpanzees laughter. Foxie seems to know when she’s being goofy and doesn’t mind a little human laughter, but she wasn’t doing these things to make us laugh – she was in her own world, so we were quiet.
